Alabama lawyers now have new guidance on the ethical use of artificial intelligence in law practice. The Alabama State Bar Office of General Counsel has published Formal Opinion 2026-01, Artificial Intelligence Use: Best Practices Under Existing Professional Conduct Rules, addressing how existing duties of competence, confidentiality, supervision, candor, reasonable fees, and client communication apply when lawyers use generative or agentic AI tools.
The opinion also includes a practical checklist for lawyers to use before and during AI-assisted legal work.
